The 1898 Final  between the Essendon Football Club and Fitzroy Football Club, was regarded as the first VFL/AFL “Grand Final”. It was held at the Junction Oval on 24 September 1898 with Fitzroy winning the match by 15 points. The year before Essendon won the premiership without any finals being played.  A further 117 Grand Finals have been played (including draws in 1948, 1977 and 2010)  resulting in a total of 116 premierships. The expansion clubs Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, Gold Coast, Brisbane Bears and the earlier University being the only clubs without a premiership. Carlton  and Essendon have won the most with 16, Collingwood 13, Hawthorn and Melbourne 12, Richmond 10, Geelong 9, Fitzroy 8, South Melbourne/Sydney 5, North Melbourne 4, Brisbane and West Coast 3, Adelaide 2, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs with 1 each.

The Geelong Football Club has enjoyed tremendous success in Grand Finals as the only regional AFL club, having taken the ultimate prize in 1925, 1931, 1937, 1952, 1963 and it’s greatest era winning 3 in 5 seasons in 2007, 2009 and 2011.

The Geelong region is also home to the Geelong Football League, Bellarine Football League, Geelong and District Football League and the Colac & District Football Netball League all of whom are gearing up for their finals series for season 2015.
